Sunday the 3rd of June was the date set aside this year for the Parish of Ardkeen annual blessing of the graves. Although the day turned out to be a very cold and blustery day a large number of parishioners along with their families and friends gathered at the graveyards at St Joseph’s for the ceremony which was presided over by our Parish Priest, Father Neeson, and he was assisted by Father Mulholland the Parish Priest of our neighbouring parishes of Ballygalget and Portaferry.
After the opening prayers, which included remembrance of all those who are buried in St Josephs and also in graveyards within the parish boundary, blessing of the graves took place and the rosary was recited. The rosary was led by Ellen Mary Woods and Brendan Ennis who started each decade with an appropriate reflection.
Following the final blessing, Father Neeson thanked everyone for coming and helping to make the afternoon a success despite the inclement weather. He once again commended those who kept the graves tidy, not only for the day but throughout the year and he said it was testimony to the esteem their loved ones were held and remembered. He also thanked all those who helped in any way before and during the ceremony and in particular Brendan and Barry for providing the amplification throughout the graveyard to allow the prayers and choir to be heard.
As is customary, St Patrick’s Church at Lisbane was also open throughout the day to allow visitors to call and view this historic church.
The afternoon concluded in the Old School where the Parish Social Committee provided welcome refreshments for one and all which gave everyone an opportunity to spend some time catching up with those they may not have seen since last year.
